Gatlinburg Tn is located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In its humble beginnings Gatlinburg Tn was first named White Oaks Flat for the many white oak trees that grew on the land. English, Scottish, and Irish immigrants settled it in the early 1800s. It is believed that the first official settler of Gatlinburg Tenn was Martha Ogle, who came with her husband and her family.

After the Revolutionary War Gatlinburg Tn (still known as White Oak Flats) offered 50 acre tracts of land to soldiers as a show of appreciation for their military services. In 1855 these homestead settlements eventually led a controversial and outspoken man by the name of Radford Gatlin to settle in Gatlinburg Tn. Gatlin opened the city’s second store, but was soon ostracized by the community and the city of Gatlinburg Tn for his controversial ways, but the city still bears his name.

At the start of the Civil War the majority of locals joined the Union Army, with a few joining the Confederate side. But Gatlinburg Tn remained largely neutral during this time of conflict, with only one battle being fought in Gatlinburg Tn. However, this did not keep Gatlinburg Tn from suffering the effects of the Civil War.

During this time period there were many robberies and break-ins in Gatlinburg Tn as both the Union and Confederate sides preyed upon this small town in order to gather supplies for battle. The hardships of the war lingered for some time as Gatlinburg Tn made the transition from a farming community to a timbering community in the early 1900’s. In fact, the first hotel built in Gatlinburg Tn was to give the traveling lumber buyers a place to lay their head.

But Gatlinburg Tn began to change around 1930 when the Great Smoky Mountain National Park began to draw in tourists for the unparalleled beauty of the Mountains. Many of the families that were displaced by the creation of the National Park began to move to Gatlinburg Tn and take jobs in the many hotels and restaurants that were cropping up.

Gatlinburg Tn was incorporated in 1945 after WWII and has become one of the premier vacation resorts in North America. Gatlinburg Tn has never forgot its roots, and that is clearly visible in the quaint village style shops on Main Street.
